Shilajit, also called mineral pitch, is the result of a long process of plant matter and minerals breaking down over centuries. It is a sticky, black, tar-like substance that seeps from rocks in high mountain ranges.
Shilajit has been used in traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, and its compounds appear beneficial for many conditions — in part thanks to its high concentration of fulvic and humic acids, along with many minerals.
Shilajit contains an antioxidant known as fulvic acid. A 2012 study suggested that fulvic acid may help block the buildup of tau protein — a key marker associated with Alzheimer's disease and similar conditions.
A 2010 study published in Andrologia looked at shilajit's effects on 35 infertile men. Participants took 100mg of processed shilajit twice daily for 90 days; by the end, 28 showed significant increases in total sperm count, healthy sperm and sperm motility.
Researchers have found significant decreases in cholesterol and triglycerides in shilajit groups compared with placebo, along with improved antioxidant status — a measure of how well the body protects its cells from damage.
